My husband and I are both originally from Ohio. We moved to Desoto County in 2004 shortly after my husband took a job in Memphis. We have lived in Olive Branch for the past four years and we love it here!
We have two children; our daughter is a senior at Center Hill High School and our son is in third grade at Overpark Elementary.
When I'm not at school I enjoy (in no particular order) running, reading, movies, spending time with my family, coffee, and cooking (eating).
I am so excited and proud to be starting my 4th year teaching at Center Hill Elementary! I passionately believe that every child has the capacity to learn and grow. I have high expectations for all of my students and I truly enjoy the challenge of finding the tools, supports, and interventions that best fit each students' needs.
Our classroom is a self-contained special education class. We have a smaller class size and are able to provide students with more direct 1-1 and small group instruction. Our small class size also allows us to differentiate our instruction based on each student's specific needs and ensure that every student receives a more individualized education. We structure our classroom similarly to a typical general education classroom.
We have a daily routine that includes circle time and daily station rotations for Math, ELA, and Reading. Our classroom activities correlate to the Mississippi Alternate Academic Standards as well as each student's IEP goals. In addition to our academics, we also work on social, behavioral, communication, and emotional skills during the day. Our students also spend time each day with their general education peers.
A major focus in our classroom is INDEPENDENCE! We encourage students to be accountable for their own behavior and their own actions. We encourage students to be proactive throughout their day, not simply waiting for an adult to tell them what to do. We teach them to use checklists, schedules, and anchor charts to complete their daily tasks, independently. Students are also expected to keep track of and take care of their own belongings. (They can do it!)
